Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
