Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
